La Salle Animo Squad bagged the 1st runner up while the FEU Cheering Squad, which foiled UP's three-peat bid last 2009 settle for 2nd runner up.

FEU squeak past UST via a buzzer-beating triple

FEU Tams escaped UST Tigers, 62-59, as rookie Mike Tolomia nailed a match-clinching triple with 2.9 ticks left in the 74th UAAP Men’s basketball tournament Saturday at the Big Dome. Tolomia caught a timely kick-out pass from reigning MVP RR Garcia, who drove to the lane with the time winding down. With the recent win, FEU now holds the solo second in the standings with a 4-1 record.

The last time UST won against FEU was way-back 2007.

FEU-NRMF's Board of Trustees Chair and Former Far Eastern University President Josephine Cojuangco-Reyes, 82 years old died yesterday after she collapsed following her eulogy for elder brother Pedro Cojuangco at the Sanctuario de San Antonio, Makati City. She was rushed to St. Lukes hospital, but to no avail.

Josephine Reyes is an elder sister of the late President Corazon Aquino, hence aunt of the current President Benigno Aquino, Jr. who was married to Nicanor Reyes, Jr. - son of FEU founder Dr. Nicanor Reyes Sr.

She served as the 7th president of FEU for 4 years, next to his husband's term.

She was the link between FEU and the Aquinos, President Noynoy Aquino and his sisters Ballsy, Pinky and Kris Aquino were born in FEU Hospital. Former President Cory Aquino studied law in FEU for 1 year until she got married to Ninoy Aquino.

NBA Superstar Kobe Bryant wears the FEU Jersey at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday afternoon for a Nike-Sponsored Demonstration game featuring Smart-Gilas and select UAAP players. This is Kobe’s 3rd visit to the Philippines as Nike’s brand ambassador. Manila is his first stop of his five-city Asian tour. “I love Manila. This is one of my favorite cities in the world”, says Kobe.

Kobe Bryant was the third NBA player who wore the FEU jersey. First was Paul Pierce and second was Vince Carter. In 2005, Vince Carter visited the FEU Gym for the school’s pep rally for UAAP Season 68 and the Tamaraws went on to capture the UAAP Men's Basketball title that year - It was a three-peat.

Over 12,000 students and athletes are expected to join the festivities today (July 9, 2011) at the Marikina Sports Complex. Rain or shine the event starts at exactly 4pm which will be aired live over Studio 23, free admission at the venue. University of Santo Tomas (UST) will have the largest contingent for the parade with 627 athletes, followed by University of the East with 512, University of the Philippines (UP) with 425, De La Salle University (DLSU) with 417, Adamson University (AdU) and Far Eastern University (FEU) with 300 and National University with 260.

PBA Cager Olsen Racela, one of Ateneo’s most successful products in the field of sports, will carry the torch and eventually light the cauldron to symbolize the opening of the season that will champion the theme "All Heart, All Out." Also among the highlights of the affair is the solemn entry of colors where Ateneo cadets will bring inside the sports facility a 60 feet x 30 feet flag.The Opening Ceremonies will end with a free concert as well featuring Spongecola, Itchy Worms, and Kjwan plus a fireworks display to cap the day. It will be the first time in recent memory that the opening will be held outside the Big Dome and no games will proceed thereafter. "We want to show that there's more to the league than just basketball", says UAAP 74 President Ricky Palou. Former UST Tigresses coach now at the Tamaraws' lair

Coach Shaq Delos Santos first steered the Tigresses to the 2009 National University Games,
then added the Shakey's V-League Season 7 first conference crown. UST won the 72nd UAAP women's volleyball plum then successfully defended the 2010 UniGames trophy.

Few months ago, news came out that UST Tigresses Head Coach Cesael "Shaq" Delos Santos resigned from his post. Reportedly, UST Athletics Director Father De Sagon didn't accept the former's resignation letter the first time, so they had a meeting to settle things out. Apparently, Coach Shaq expressed its "time to move on". Where is Coach Shaq heading now?

He's back where he truly belongs, in the Tamaraw lair. As an article by Lhea Bagona puts it, "He defanged himself to unleash the horns and get back to where he truly belongs knowing there is no place like home".

A former FEU Spiker, Delos Santos officially signed with FEU last April 1st and is returning to the land of green and gold, this time to beef up the coaching staff of the FEU Women's Volleyball Team, despite previously losing prized player, former UAAP MVP Cherry Vivas as the latter transfers to National University.

"Shaq" was a BS Management Graduate of FEU and led the Tamaraw squad to a UAAP volleyball championship during his final playing year in 1999. Last March, his contract ended with University of Santo Tomas (UST). Before he decided to return, he had always kept in touch with his former Men's Volleyball mentor and now Lady Tamaraws Head Coach Nestor Pamilar.

Indeed, two forces will reunite this year to bring boost to the Lady Tams' UAAP 74 campaign, with the aim to bring back the women's volleyball crown to Morayta. At present, The FEU Volleyball Team is currently on the lookout for new talented recruits, in time for UAAP 74 Volleyball opening next semester.

Total ban on pirated DVDs in Quiapo

It's first Friday of the month and its Quiapo day for devotees of the Black Nazarene today (July 1, 2011), and starting this date, a total ban on selling pirated DVDs within Quiapo area will be strictly enforced by the City of Manila led by Mayor Alfredo Lim. This is after a one month grace period given by the local government to mostly Muslim vendors in a tight Muslim community of Quiapo.

Thursday night, vendors had a bargain-spree in a desperate move to consume all their stocks and went on to sell DVD for as low as 5 pesos each. Mayor Lim has also rejected a plea by ARMM vice gubernatorial bet Margarita Cojuangco to extend the deadline for stopping the sale of pirated CDs and DVDs in the area.

The feisty Mayor said he had only allowed the vendors to violate the law before due to humanitarian consideration, but as Lim pointed out, now they must stop. Following a report of a Washington-based office of the US Trade Representative citing Quiapo as one of the most notorious markets for pirated products.

Highlights: Kapamilya celebrity, FEU Alum himself Vice Ganda stole the limelight as he throws support anew to FEU for the upcoming University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 74.

In the basketball match between the FEU All Stars and the 2011 Basketball Team, the legends defeated the Season 74 team by a measly three points, 71-68. The current roster made a huge run in the last period, cutting the deficit from 20 points thru RR Garcia's leadership. It wasn't enough though to win against a team led by PBA star Arwind Santos.

FEU retires and hangs jersey #14 to the rafters in honor of another Tamaraw star, Johnny Abarrientos.

CHED to improve its class suspension protocol

Heeding complaints from students trapped in flooded streets around Metro Manila in last week’s monsoon rains brought by tropical storm “Falcon”, The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) vowed to improve its class suspension protocol to include occasions of severe weather and flooding in areas not under storm alerts. CHED memo order no. 34 series of 2010, classes in the college-level will only be automatically suspended during a signal no. 3 typhoon. Schools are given discretion to suspend classes during signal no. 1 and 2 typhoons.

Social networking sites were abuzz as students wait for the announcement of suspension.

Twitter user @janinageronimo has this to say “Don't ever expect CHED to suspend college classes unless you want another Ondoy.” Another twitter user @alvindakis said “CHED defers decision to school admins if classes were to suspend. Maybe they'll be happier to see students float in the streets, literally.” COMELEC Spokesman James Jimenez also vent ire on the micro blogging site “If CHED can't decide, at least it should call all colleges and universities and report their responses. Service always.”, he tweeted.

Kabataan Partylist likewise scored CHED in its “weak and indecisive” suspension of class policy. “Students are battered every time they are forced to brave the stormy weather to go to school. This unnecessary agony could be prevented if CHED would be more decisive in exercising it regulatory powers with regard to the suspension of classes .

“We’ll try to make it easier for our students.”

CHED executive director Julito Vitriolo said the commission would tap social media (Yes, twitter/facebook) and maximize its website (www.ched.gov.ph) to make timely announcements about class suspensions, including discretionary decisions of individual universities and colleges. “What we will do is order our regional offices to collate information. We’ll improve information dissemination so that the students will be better informed in decision-making,” Vitriolo said.

He said CHED relies on information from the weather bureau and disaster agencies in deciding whether to suspend classes in certain areas. “There are constraints but, for example, certain universities have suspended classes, we will collate that information and relay that [to media] for broadcast, although schools can already go straight to media also,”. He further said that CHED will be “more proactive” and make use of “social communication” to provide students advance information about class suspensions, recognizing that the sector it serves relies more on the Internet for information.

Note: In NCR alone, CHED holds authority to over 300 public and private higher education institutions. Nationwide, there are about 2,180 colleges and institutions under CHED.

V-league down to four teams

The Shakey’s V-League suffered a major (major) blow after four teams pulled out of the competition, leaving the country’s premiere volleyball tournament with only four teams left when it opens its Season 8 second conference this July 10.

Ricky Palou, president of the organizing Sports Vision, said only Ateneo, University of Perpetual Help, San Sebastian College and Lyceum were left in the roster after Adamson University and Far Eastern University begged off from competition. University of Santo Tomas and La Salle, which missed the previous conference, also confirmed that they won’t see action just like last conference, citing the academic load of players.

Adamson and FEU also withdrew for the same reason. But Sports Vision chairman Moying Martelino said the league won’t settle for four teams, saying they are negotiating with four more teams to join since he said the ideal number of teams is eight. With the pull-out of a total of four UAAP Schools, this could be the final curtain for V-league. We hope its not the end though.

An Asian Games-inspired opening ceremony for UAAP Season 74 will break the usual tradition where only basketball teams and performers are seen during these events. This year, the opening rites will be attended by all competing athletes from the eight participating universities. It will happen on July 9th at the Marikina Sports Complex and for the first time no basketball game will be played on the opening day.

The ceremony will highlight the torch relay and the lighting of the UAAP flame.

The next day, FEU will face La Salle at 2pm while host Ateneo meets Adamson at 4pm.

Cinemalaya entry tilted “Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” (The Dance of Two Left Feet) by Alvin Yapan and Alemberg Ang had its entire production taken inside Far Eastern University Manila with guest participation of the FEU Dance Company. The film is starred by Jean Garcia, Paulo Avelino and Rocco Nacino. “It's a love triangle with a twist. Sobrang galing ng pagkakagawa nito!” said young actor Rocco Nacino in a recent press conference.

Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa explores the intersection and divergence between feminist and gay concerns in the third world context, as it features the poetry of Merlinda Bobis, Ruth Elynia Mabanglo, Joi Barrios, Rebecca Anonuevo, Benilda Santos and Ophelia Dimalanta. When Marlon, a college student, stalks Karen, his literature professor, he finds out that she moonlights as a choreographer and dance teacher in a dance studio. Frustrated over his performance in her literature class, he plans to impress her instead by learning to poeticize his body movements and enroll in her dance class. He hires his classmate to teach him the basics of dancing. As Dennis, his tutor, teaches him how his body should move, Marlon begins to understand the intersections between the art of poetry and dance.

This opens up his world to new insights about Karen’s life as a single woman who chose to live the life of an artist in a third world setting. Marlon begins to understand how the poems being discussed by Karen in class are testaments to her choice to stand by her art. Karen eventually finds out, through Dennis, that Marlon only enrolled in her class to be near her. She confronts Marlon about this and wishes that his interest for dance would survive his infatuation for her. Marlon feels betrayed over Dennis telling Karen. But it is also this sense of betrayal that tells him that he has already become close to Dennis, whom he now considers a friend. Up until then, Marlon and Dennis have become inseparable as they both tackled the complexities of poetry and dance. Sensing the coldness between the two, Karen set them up to help her train a group of dancers for a cotillion dance.

Eventually, Karen trains both Marlon and Dennis to star in her dance adaptation of the epic Humadapnon, when she bags a grant. Marlon will play the lead role of Humadapnon, who becomes trapped in a cave full of women. Dennis’ character now has to rescue Marlon from the women, as he plays the role of Sunmasakay, the male incarnation of the goddess Nagmalitong Yawa. On the eve of their performance, in a drunken conversation, Marlon confronts Karen how he could not understand her poetry. Karen, in response, assures Marlon that he does understand her poetry. His mind is just unwilling to, unlike his body which already understands. Karen invites Marlon to dance with her, but in the middle of her dance, she passes him onto Dennis. Their drunken dance culminates with Marlon and Dennis taking on the roles of Humadapnon and Sunmasakay on stage.

Cinemalaya opens its seventh year on July 15th and its getting bigger and better each year with two theaters at Greenbelt 3 will be dedicated to Cinemalaya on July 16-24, 2011. The films to be shown at Greenbelt will be those in competition in the New Breed Full Length Feature category, the Short Feature Category, the Directors Showcase, and NETPAC Philippine Premieres. The films of the new Focus Asia section of Cinemalaya will also be shown at Greenbelt. At the CCP, the Festival will be held in seven venues. The opening ceremony is slated on July 15, 6:00 pm followed by the festival opening film at the CCP Main Theater. The Cinemalaya Awards Night will be held on July 24, 7:00 pm at the same venue.

The nine finalists of the New Breed Full Length Feature category each received a P500,000 seed grant from the Cinemalaya Foundation as investment for the production. The Best Full Length Feature Film will receive a prize of P200,000 and the Balanghai Trophy. The New Breed Full Length feature category is open to Filipino filmmakers who have not yet directed more than three full feature films.

FEU grad on top of medical exams again

Another graduate of Far Eastern University – Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (FEU-NRFM) topped the recent medical examination for two consecutive years.

With a rating of 86.33 %, Eleanor De Guzman Dela Pena led the 654 others who passed the Physician Licensure Examination for February 2011, announced by the Professional Regulation Commission on Friday. Also from FEU-FERN was Noreen Manlapaz Dizon, who landed on top 5 with 85.17 percent. Last year, It was Marie Jo-Ann Beltran Cabanting of FEU-NRMF who topped the examinations.

FEU-NRMF likewise topped the February 2011 list of the top performing medical schools in the Philippines with 86.24 passing percentage.

Tams claim 5-peat in UAAP Chess

The FEU Men’s Chess team won its fifth straight UAAP crown and 12th overall. The Tamaraws blanked La Salle, 4-0 to seal their 5-peat victory Saturday at the FEU Technology Building. FEU accumulated 43 points, while University of Santo Tomas placed second with 35 points, and Adamson finished third with 26.5 points. FEU’s Sheider Nebato won his second straight Most Valuable Player award and teammate Lennon Hart Salgado was awarded Rookie of the Year. The team also won the jackpot prize in Eat Bulaga’s Pinoy Henyo after sweeping the first round eliminations last month.

Various innovations, like customized team cubicles and digital chess clocks were introduced this year by UAAP Chess host, Far Eastern University which earned raves from member schools. As such, FEU will be hosting the tournament again in season 74.

The FEU Student Body has spoken – Samahan ng mga mag-aaral para sa Sambayanan (SAMASA) overwhelmed Sandigan Party by winning the majority of elective positions available in Friday’s Student Election at the Far Eastern University campus in Manila. Thirty-five posts have been claimed by SAMASA out of the available 60 seats in six institutes excluding the central student organization, noteworthy is a clean sweep in the Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance (IABF) and the Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS). IAS has the biggest student population come AY 2011-2012. The result from the recent poll was SAMASA’s biggest win over the past three years.

“REDeem the true essence of leadership” was SAMASA’s battle cry this year

RP as the ‘Ubelt’ of Asia

A total of 19,121 foreigners have flocked to the Philippines last year to seek for higher and quality education, thus affirming the country’s status as the university belt of Asia. The number was an improvement from the 2008 record which registered 18,353 foreign enrollees. South Koreans topped the list of foreign students with 6,000, followed by 3,395 Chinese, 2,980 Iranians and 1,004 Americans. The list also includes hundreds of Indonesians, Indians, Taiwanese, Kuwaitis, Nepalese, Thais, Sudanese, Vietnamese, Nigerians, Kenyans, Japanese, Pakistanis, Timorese, and Myanmar nationals.

“The fact that many foreigners are studying here means that the quality of our educational system is continuously improving. Our schools are competing with the best of their counterparts in Asia in attracting foreign enrollees,” Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Ronaldo Ledesma has said.

Most of the foreign students are studying in Metro Manila, with the biggest number of enrollees at the Centro Escolar University (1,066). Other schools that have significant foreign student populations are the University of the East (799), Far Eastern University (673), Manila Central University (504), University of Santo Tomas (453), De La Salle University (396), and Fatima (309).

Far Eastern University Manila recently celebrated the Chinese New Year through the Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management (ITHM), at the ground floor of ARH Building with FEU officials gracing the event led by President Lydia Echauz. Its been a vision-mission of FEU to be a university of choice in Asia as it strives to contribute to the advancement of the global society.

FEU sweeps UAAP 73 Athletics meet

Far Eastern University swept the Men’s and Women’s 73rd UAAP Athletics title Monday (January 31) at the Philsports oval in Pasig City. The recent win placed FEU on top as the winningest team in the history of UAAP Athletics having the most number of titles (19 titles) in both Men’s and Women’s categories. Furthermore, the Green and Gold tracksters have swept the Track and Field tourney for a record 11 seasons.

The Lady Tamaraws sustained its mastery of the tournament after clinching its eight straight UAAP crown by amassing a total of 303 points. UST came in second place with 252 and UE at third with 102 points. FEU’s Dalyn Carmen and Aprilen Laudencia was the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awardee respectively. Laudencia won gold in the high jump and 1 silver on long jump, while Carmen won three golds in 10,000m run; 5,000m run and 3,000m steeplechase.

In the men’s category, the Tamaraws relied on a strong finish in the 4x400 meter relay team (3:23.68) and to 19 year old Jesson Cid who had 4 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Tams overthrew last year’s champion UE by just a single point in the overall tally, 202-201 to regain the title they last won in 2008. Cid was awarded Most Valuable Player, no less. He had a remarkable performance in the decathlon event (6134 pts) which broke his own UAAP record and national junior record.

Three-term Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago’s talk at the Far Eastern University Thursday, centered on youth empowerment through new media. Santiago did not appear at the Senate public hearing that day. “Sinabi ko sa sarili ko, aabsent ako sa Senado pero di sa pagpunta sa FEU, the Senator remarked.

“When someone says, Ang Ganda mo! I say, Sana ikaw din.” “Hindi ko sinasabing maganda ako, ang sinasabi ko panget ka” – Senator Santiago started her talk with pick-up lines that drew laughter around the fabled auditorium. Over a thousand audience attended the symposium including students, professors, school officials and even the media. The event was sponsored by the FEU College Y Club, the Political Science – International Studies Society and the Institute of Arts and Sciences Student Council.

Senator Santiago pushed for a Philippine version of WikiLeaks, purposively to shame corrupt public officials. “In social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, you have the opportunity to express your opinion in fighting the culture of corruption in our society.” Santiago said that since the youth are more knowledgeable about computers and the internet, creating a website similar to WikiLeaks is one way of being proactive in helping the government.

WikiLeaks is a nonprofit media organization whose goal is “to bring important news and information to the public.” It provides a new, secure, and anonymous way, by means of its so-called electronic drop box, so that sources could leak information to its journalists, it is “principled leaking”. It has caused an international uproar though as it has released not only confidential messages about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also about the conduct of American diplomacy around the world. It has succeeded in bringing to light secret information about governments and corporations.“I urge you as FEU students to study the case of WikiLeaks, winner of the 2009 New Media Award for human rights reporting, from Amnesty International,” Santiago said.

She added that “university students can use the internet for conducting investigative journalism. You can access anonymous sources of information. You should provide a high security anonymous dropbox to provide maximum protection to your sources.”

For those really interested would-be leakers, Santiago offered more tips.

“You should operate a number of supporters across our archipelago. Do not keep logs, so that the logs cannot be seized. Provide instructions on how to submit materials to you, via net cafes, wireless hot spots, and even the post office. This way, if your Wiki is infiltrated by an external agency, your sources cannot be traced,” she said.

The senator said that under Philippine criminal law, the main liability for internet whistleblowers is a charge of espionage. “However, the Espionage Law was intended to target those who seek to disclose classified information to aid a foreign government. But this provision might not apply against an actor who discloses classified information for other reasons, such as to name and shame crooks in a corrupt government agency,” she explained. “I believe that if Congress wants to shut down your Wiki site, Congress will have to draft a new law, more explicitly criminalizing the sources of leaks of classified information.”

The senator however clarified that she is not advocating computer hacking, but more publishing on the internet to improve transparency in the government. A US landmark case ruled that only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government. “Ladies and gentlemen of FEU – be vigilant against corruption! For vigilance is the price of freedom from corruption.”, Santiago finally concluded.

Vice Ganda went to the FEU Manila campus yesterday to rehearse his Showtime sample scheduled for the next day with the FEU Cheering Squad. PNoy receives 55 FEU Medical Alumni

President Benigno S. Aquino III on Friday welcomed the 55 heads of Far Eastern University Medical Alumni Association from Northern Illinois who made a courtesy call before embarking on their respective medical missions in the countryside.

He informed his callers that he and his siblings were all born in the FEU Hospital, which included his youngest sister, Kris in 1971. “When I was told that FEU Medical Alumni would want to visit me, I readily said why not,” the President told his visitors.

He thanked the visiting medical practitioners for the help they have extended to their countrymen through the annual medical missions, “with 40 percent of Filipinos never getting the chance to see a health professional and we are trying to rectify that.” He said the Department of Health is adding 10,000 nurses to perform the role of midwives in various rural health units of the country which would cost around P800 million for the year “to get them better access.”

The government is targeting, at the very least, the bottom 20 percent of the population which number 4.6 to 5.3 million families to be fully enrolled in the Philhealth system so they can enjoy medical insurance, he said.

Another program by the Department of Science and Technology will propagate a very simple clay-based filtration system which has micro pores in it smaller than the sizes of viruses and bacteria to prevent these from getting into the rural potable water systems.

Electricity and gravity would be needed for this filtration system and this will cost P100 per base. Instead of the multiple filtration systems and pumping stations which cost a lot more, these simple filtration systems will gain them immediate access to potable water. The DOST will soon distribute these systems.

The President said that the P21-billion conditional cash transfer program is an investment for the future that will cover public school students. He said 14 out of every hundred students go on and finish college while 86 percent do not.

The goals of CCT are: giving stipend to families so they keep their children in school and they undergo various health checks and immunization. Sadly, “we have not been able to immunize them from five preventable diseases.” The President said he hopes the families will be able to keep the children in school for ten years, which is the term of basic education.

With the problem in education system before such as lack of books and teachers and shortage of classrooms that led to packing four classes in one room giving children only four hours of effective learning experience “we will be changing this gradually by adopting the K+12 program or 12-year basic education, that includes preschool, the Chief Executive said.

He said all of these programs will be accelerated this year with the economy expected to grow robustly in spite of the worldwide economy “as we have been instituting reforms in the bureaucracy” and in more transparent way of doing business.

Bar Exams moved to UST in November

The Supreme Court of the Philippines has announced Wednesday, that the 2011 Bar Examinations will be held on November, instead of September at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in España, Manila. This year also marks the 400th (Quadricentennial) anniversary of UST. The decision to move the Bar Examinations in another venue, came after De La Salle University no longer renewed the contract with the high court. But Supreme Court Spokesperson Jose Midas Marquez clarified that it has nothing to do with the explosion last September that injured around 40 people.

Last year, Petitions were circulated to urge the high court to hold bar exams outside Metro Manila – Cebu was pushed as a venue. Dean Baldomero Estenzo of the University of Cebu College of Law said holding the bar in Metro Manila “prejudices candidates” residing in Visayas and Mindanao, because the cost of living in the capital is high.

It is noteworthy though that under Section 11 of Rule 138 of the Court clearly states that the annual examinations should take place in the city of Manila.

SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER

It is the first time in two decades that the court moved the Bar examination to another month. Marquez explained that because September is a rainy season the exams have been moved to November. It can be remembered that in 2009, the court has suspended the last day of the exams due to Typhoon “Ondoy”. The rainfall brought by “Ondoy” to Metro Manila and nearby areas in a span of six hours was the most in recorded history.

FEU celebrates 83rd founding anniversary

Far Eastern University celebrates its 83rd Founding Anniversary with the theme “A Green FEU for a Golden Tomorrow”.

Official activities during this anniversary week (January 17-21, 2011) will focus on saving the environment and the impact of technology.

UPDATE (January 21): The FEU Concert dubbed Concierto Piyu was cancelled due to unexpected rainfall. There’s an ongoing proposal to reschedule the event to February. Vice Ganda, Pupil and Callalily were all present at the time of the cancellation. Accordingly, the two bands’ talent fees were non-refundable.

FEU officials will honor the memory of Dr. Nicanor Reyes Sr. with the traditional Floral Offering at his grave in the Manila Memorial Park in Parañaque, with separate masses in the FEU Manila Chapel and FEU Makati Multi-Purpose Hall and a commemorative offering at the Founder’s Marker.
A special four day blood letting competition will be held at the Pavilion.

UAAP 73: Lady Archers may face forfeiture

UPDATE (01/19/11): The UAAP Board on Wednesday, January 19 has meted out a one-game forfeiture from La Salle Lady Spikers’ unblemished record in the first round of Women’s Volleyball. Carmela Garbin and Clarisse Yeung have been disqualified to play for the rest of the season, together with UP’s Lorraine Chua and UE’s Alyssa Paril. All four players competed in the Vikings Cup hosted by the World Citi Colleges during the Christmas break. DLSU, however remained on top of the standings, 7-1.

La Salle Lady Archers faces forfeiture of four out of its seven wins (a sweep) in the first round of UAAP 73 Women’s Volleyball, as two if its bench players, namely Carmela Garbin and Clarisse Yeng were found to have joined another league – The WCC 3rd Viking Cup Open Invitational Volleyball Tournament, while the UAAP Season is ongoing. The UAAP Board will discuss the matter on Wednesday at its meeting, as such the UAAP schedule and standings would remain as it is pending resolution of the board.

Both UAAP and NCAA prohibits its players in all sports from competing in other tournaments for the duration of the season. Reportedly, the DLSU administration had already suspended the erring players. In the NCAA Women’s Volleyball, College of Saint Benilde players Arriane Yap and Janel Lim caused the disqualification of their team in the semifinals after joining the very same league, the two La Salle players have joined. NCAA Semifinalist Perpetual Help was also disqualified after its players Ronerry dela Cruz and April Ann Sartin competed in an inter-village meet.

UAAP 73 Volleyball: Double win for FEU

Over 2,000 volleyball fans, including comedienne Vice Ganda trooped to the Fil-Oil Flying V Arena in San Juan on Wednesday as the UAAP Season 73 Volleyball concludes its first round of eliminations and witness what could be a preview of this year’s championship.

FEU TAMS STILL FLAWLESS, LADY TAMS SURVIVE

In Men’s Volleyball, FEU outplayed erstwhile unbeaten and four-peat seeking UST Tigers in five hard played sets, 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 15-13. Tams rise to 7-0 in standing while UST fell to 6-1. FEU’s Rodolfo Labrador led the Tamaraw charge with 21 attack points and 3 blocks. The last time these two teams faced each other was November last year at the finals of the 15th University Games where FEU won in similar fashion.

Meanwhile, rookie-laden Lady Tams survived round 1 by claiming its first win of the season at the expense of the UP Fighting Maroons in five sets as well, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 19-25, 15-8. Veteran Maica Morada was the player of the game with 23 points.

In the Women’s main event – perennial contender La Salle Lady Archers thwarted defending champion UST Tigresses in 3 sets, 25-20, 25-19, 25-12 to sweep the first round of eliminations for the second straight season. DLSU’s Abigail Maraño scored 13 points, including three blocks, while Stephanie Mercado added 12 points for La Salle. UST’s Aiza Maizo is the best scorer with 16 points (15 attacks and 1 block).

Codiñera replaces Chiongson as UE head coach

Former PBA player, Jerry Codiñera replaced Lawrence Chiongson as the head coach of the University of the East Red Warriors, a school official from UE confirmed on Tuesday. The replacement rumor has been circulating a few days ago before the confirmation was made, source told us that Codiñera met the basketball team at 1pm yesterday, which is 01-11-11.

Jerry Codiñera who was playing for UE when it last won the UAAP Basketball Championship back in 1985 assumes bigger role as he call the shots now and help rebuild the Warriors (the 2nd winningest basketball team in the UAAP, next to FEU) who has unfortunately missed the elite final four in season 73 for the first time in 8 years.

Ex-PBA cagers dominate UAAP Coaching Staffs

Veteran PBA cagers now dominate the UAAP Coaching Staff of each school, to wit: Norman Black as head coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles, Dindo Pumaren for the DLSU Green Archers, Leo Austria for Adamson Falcons, and UST Growling Tigers’ Pido Jarencio.

Interim head coach for the FEU Tamaraws Richie Ticzon, who has temporarily replaced Coach Glenn Capacio is likely to be replaced by yet another PBA/Tamaraw legend Johnny Abbarientos or Victor Pablo. Meanwhile, National University has recently announced as well that Eric Altamirano is the new coach of the Bulldogs and just November last year, the UP Maroons tapped PBA deputy mentor Ricky Dandan as its head coach, in hopes of redeeming themselves from a winless season 73.

UAAP Season 74 is sure to be a clash of the coaches too!

Far Eastern University (FEU) and Adamson University (AdU) got off to a great start in their respective divisions in the second round of the 73rd University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) chess tournament held at the FEU New Tech Mini Auditorium in Manila on Sunday.

The Morayta-based FEU squad, under the tutelage of head coach Grandmaster (GM) Jayson Gonzales and assistant coach NM Alex Milagrosa, opened their bid for a fifth-straight crown on a bright note.

UAAP 73 back in action

Back from holiday break, UAAP 73 resumes this January 2011 with three sports commencing action for the first time this season while three others entering pivotal stages. UAAP 73 Chess, hosted by Far Eastern University will start on January 8 at the FEU Mini-Auditorium. The FEU Men's Chess team, under Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales is eyeing for a historic 5-peat while its women counterpart guns for a back-to-back championship this year. Meanwhile, Tennis will also begin that day with defending champion La Salle Lady Archers facing University of the Philippines and Season 72 runner up UST Tigresses goes up against Ateneo at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center. UAAP 73 Football, hosted by Ateneo de Manila University kicks off the following weekend (January 16) at the Erenchum field in Ateneo campus with defending champion Far Eastern University Men’s Team tackling the UP Fighting Maroons in the AM schedule.

Competitions in volleyball, softball and baseball heat up.

In men’s volleyball, titlist UST and perennial contender FEU (both with unblemished record in five outings) look to sustain their strong presence against National University and Adamson respectively at The Arena in San Juan. In women’s side, defending champ UST and league favorite Lady Archers (both likewise undefeated thus far) will each face National U and University of the East respectively. see volleyball second round schedule

The softball teams, led by unbeaten Adamson Lady Falcons, start their respective second round campaigns on the same date at the Rosario Field.

It will be the turn of the baseball squads headed by spotless UST Tigers to take the diamond of the Rizal Memorial the next day for their second phase of competition.

UAAP may use the new UST gym

MANILA, Philippines — The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) may use the University of Santo Tomas Gym for some of its games, including basketball, for Season 74.

The gym, which is part of the P800-million UST Sports Complex, is expected to be finished by January 28 in time for the school’s 400th anniversary.

An Ateneo sports official said they plan to use it as possible venue for basketball and volleyball. “If it’s already complete, why not?” said Ricky Palou, the Ateneo athletic director and representative to the UAAP board.

Ateneo is host of the coming UAAP season.

The sports complex is four stories high and boasts of a modern basketball court with bleachers that can accommodate 5,792 patrons. The size of the gym is much bigger than The Arena in San Juan, the venue for the on-going Season 73 volleyball tournament, which can house around 4,500 fans.

The UST gym, though, is smaller than the Blue Eagles Gym in Katipunan, which can sit 7,500. The construction of the sports complex started in 2008 and it will house the facilities for fencing, badminton, table tennis, indoor track, judo, dancing, gymnastics, and a fitness center at the ground floor.

Aside from the sports facilities, the building will also be home to classrooms, administrative offices, and space for food concessionaires. A multi-deck parking space will also be erected near the gymnasium.

The new gym will also include a museum display of the various trophies UST has won. The new building will replace the old UST gym, which was built in 1927.

Collegiate Mythical Five named

Two Most Valuable Players, a three-time champion, a national team member and an energetic big man will comprise this season’s Collegiate Mythical Five as the UAAP-NCAA Press Corps hold its annual Collegiate Basketball Awards on Jan. 17 at the Topaz 1 of the Gateway Suites in Cubao, Quezon City.

Selected by the group of scribes covering both leagues in this elite group are Far Eastern University’s RR Garcia, San Beda’s Sudan Daniel, Ateneo’s Kirk Long, FEU’s Aldrech Ramos and San Sebastian’s Calvin Abueva.

The five will join Ateneo’s Norman Black (UAAP Coach of the Year) and San Beda’s Frankie Lim (NCAA Coach of the Year) and Ateneo’s Ryan Buenafe and San Beda’s Garvo Lanete (Pivotal Player Awards) in the list of winners of this event presented by Smart.

This annual awards night, also supported by ACCEL, 316, FilOil, Terrilicious, Gatorade, San Miguel Corporation and the Philippine Sportswriters Association, will start at 7 p.m.

Despite FEU’s failed title bid, Garcia rose from a mere backup guard to a star averaging a league-leading 16.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 steals to win the UAAP MVP award. He was the first guard to bag the said plum since FEU alumnus and PBA legend Johnny Abarrientos did the trick in 1991.

Daniel bounced back from a disappointing end to his rookie year in 2009 by posting 10.9 points, 11.4 rebounds and 4.4 blocks to bag the NCAA MVP trophy as San Beda won its fourth title in five seasons via a historic 18-game sweep.

In helping Ateneo win its third straight UAAP crown, Long was one of the major contributors for the Blue Eagles. The veteran guard tallied 9.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals and was mostly tasked to play solid defense and hit crucial shots when needed.

A member of the Smart Gilas Pilipinas team that placed sixth in the Guangzhou Asian Games, Ramos also helped FEU reach the finals for the first time since 2005 after norming 11.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.1 blocks. He was also named to the UAAP Mythical Five.

And seeing San Sebastian’s NCAA title reign ended in its finals loss to San Beda, Abueva managed to produce big numbers for the Stags by registering 16.3 points and 12.6 rebounds per game highlighted by 13 double-double games.

JANUARY 2010

(January 4) MARTIAL LAW IN FEU – The infamous term was dubbed by Professor Joey Ting, president of the FEU Faculty Association. The issue stemmed from an alleged maltreatment of the new security guards to Mr. Ting. “In my eight years in the university, this is the first time I was physically touched and hurt by a security guard.”, Mr. Ting wrote. read full story

(January 20) STUDENT PROTEST IN FEU – A group of students staged a protest in front of the FEU Administration Building, condemning among others the “Martial Law” incident. The protest coincided with FEU’s 82nd foundation week celebration.

(January 22) VICE GANDA IN FEU – It was during the 82nd founding anniversary of FEU (FEU concert) when Jose Marie Viceral popularly known as Vice Ganda was reunited once again with his alma mater, the concert also featured Spongecola and some homegrown FEU Talents. Reportedly, it was the most attended FEU concert in recent memory. “Bago pa ako naging isang kabayo, isa akong Tamaraw”, says Vice.

FEU GRAD TOPS MEDICAL BOARD – Marie Jo-Ann Beltran Cabanting of FEU – Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation ranked first out of the 621 passers in the Physician Licensure Examination which was released February 2010. FEU-NRMF takes pride to be included among the top medical institution in Asia as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

UST WINS THE OVER-ALL UAAP 72 CROWN, FEU AT THIRD PLACE

FACULTY STRIKE IN FEU – The FEU Faculty Union was supposed to have its first major protest rally against the FEU Administration, rumor of a no classes scenario spread like wildfire until the planned strike was cancelled after both parties reached a Memorandum of Agreement.

FEU ADVO TURNS 75 – FEU Advocate, the official student publication of Far Eastern University celebrated its 75th anniversary and 12th year revival.

THE ABS-CBN HARAPAN Forum in FEU – The first-ever historic face off (tandem debate) of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates was supposed to happen in Far Eastern University, March 28th Sunday. However, two days prior the event, ABS-CBN cancelled the forum, after candidates declined to participate. The Gibo-Edu tandem was the first to decline the invitation because of other commitments.

(March 28) TRANSFORMERS RALLY IN FEU – Gordon-Bayani supporters assembled outside FEU. The tandem including Bro. Eddie Villanueva and Perfecto Yasay were the only two who confirmed attendance for the scheduled HARAPAN debate.

APRIL 2010

(April 15) THE CONTROVERSIAL MANNY PANGILINAN SPEAKS AT THE FEU GRADUATION RITES – Businessman (PLDT Chairman, owner of TV 5 and Smart Telecommunications) Manny V. MAY 2010

(May 23) TAMARAW TRACKSTER BREAKS PHILIPPINE RECORD – a UAAP Athlete himself, Jesson Cid stole the limelight in the last day of the 2010 Milo National Open Track and Field championship when he topped the boys’ decathlon in record-breaking fashion, a new Philippine record was set. He ruled 9 out of 10 events and amassed a total of 6,094 points en route to erasing the 5,535 former mark of Darius de Rosas in 1980.

JUNE 2010

RR GARCIA BAGS UAAP 73 MVP AWARD – FEU Sophomore cager Ryan Roose Garcia captured the UAAP 73 Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) recognition for topping the individual statistical points and most importantly for leading the Tamaraw squad even at the jaws of defeat as they ended the elimination round as the top seeded team with 12-2 win loss card, the team’s best finish since winning the crown in 2005.

(September 25) ATENEO NEARS THREE-PEAT – Ateneo moved a win shy of a rare three-peat in the UAAP, after a surprising blowout win against top seeded Far Eastern University, 72-49. Game 1 of the finals aired for the first time via ABS-CBN Channel 2.

(September 31) ATENEO COMPLETES A GRAND SLAM – The Ateneo Blue Eagles placed themselves in UAAP’s history book after duplicating the rare three-peat made by their junior’s counterpart through a finals sweep of the FEU Tamaraws in Game 2, 65-62

OCTOBER 2010

THE 1ST FEU CAR SHOW – The first-ever FEU Car Show was participated by no more than 20 car owners. It was held on October 8 at the FERN Parking Lot near the FEU Manila campus.

(October 10) RUN FOR PASIG RIVER – Participated by the FEU community, the 10-10-10 Run for Pasig River successfully made it to the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest footrace event in the world with a total of 116, 086 runners.

NOVEMBER 2010

UNIGAMES 2010 RESULTS – FEU copped gold medals in Women's Table Tennis and Men's Volleyball, while Women's Chess and Women's Badminton settled for silvers. The Men's Basketball team took home a bronze at the expense of UAAP finals tormentor Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles.

(December 19) TAMS GAIN SOLO SECOND IN B-LEAGUE – The FEU team humbled league-leading Saint Clare Colleges via a 2-1 decision and racked up 8 out of 9 maximum points to gain solo second in the ongoing National Collegiate Billiards League.

(December 20) FEU’s STRONG FINISH IN ASIAN CHESS CHALLENGE – Eight Tamaraws made it to the over-all Top Ten individual ranking (men’s and women’s division combined) of the 15th Grand Asian Chess Challenge, held annually in Malaysia.

MMFF 2010 winners revealed

Martina Aileen de las Alas popularly known as Ai-Ai wins the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival Best Actress.

A very emotional Ai-Ai de las Alas receives her best actress trophy at the 36th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Awards Night at the Meralco Theater for her movie Ang Tanging Ina (Last na ‘To), the third and final installment of Star Cinema’s comedy franchise, the same movie also won the coveted Best Picture Award and 7 other awards including Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Story and Best Supporting Actress.

Among others, the comedy film was also a blockbuster hit on its first day of opening (Christmas Day) which rakes in a gross of 20 million pesos behind the top-grossing Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote with 31 million pesos.

Ai-Ai was a Mass Communication graduate of Far Eastern University, Batch 1985. Last November 20, she celebrated her 20 years in the Philippine showbiz industry thus continuing the stature she has established for herself – a comedy royalty.

Ai-Ai says she only has one wish left: “Sana po mapangasawa ko na si Vic Sotto para sa next film fest, hindi na kami magkalaban at sa amin na ang lahat ng kita.”

Although failing to recapture the crown they once held in 2007 as a neophyte and the country’s lone representative in the Grand Asian Chess Championship, The Far Eastern University – Philippine chess team went home with heads up high this year, as eight Tamaraws made it to the over-all top 10 individual ranking (men’s and women’s division combined) of the just concluded 15th Grand Asian Chess Challenge, otherwise known as the GACC International Inter-Varsity Chess Championship held annually in Malaysia.

Noteworthy is Woman Fide Master (WFM) Rulp Lem Jose who bagged a bronze medal after finishing with 7 points behind Russia’s silver medalist WIM Ekaterina Kharashuta (7.5 points) and gold medalist WGM Vera Nebolsina (8 points). It was only Jose who handed Nebolsina, the eventual champion its single loss in the tourney.

Meanwhile, four other women from FEU/Philippines successfully landed on the Top 10 mark, namely: WFM Jedara Docena, (Rank 5), Lovelyn Medina (Rank 6), Jenny Rose Palomo (Rank 8) and Rona Reigner Señora (Rank 10).

In the Men’s category, International Master (IM) Darban Morteza (8 points) and Nasri Amin (7.5 points) of Iran took the gold and silver respectively. Grandmaster (GM) Pavel Maletin of Russia won the bronze medal. Tamaraw John Ranel Morazo settled in 5th rank followed by teammates Sheider Nebato (Rank 8) and Christian Arroyo (Rank 10).

When asked on how’s the experience of joining the prestigious league, The 3rd year B.S.Ed. mathematics major John Ranel Morazo told us that “it was a tough experience for me because in my past experiences in GACC (2007 & 2008) only 1 or 2 grandmasters have joined, but in [this year’s] GACC there are 2 grandmasters (one is 2636), 1 international master and 2 fide master, so i think it was a hard battle for us.”

Morazo was unbeaten after Round 6 and almost poised to get the championship, but not until Round 7 to 8, where he was in “bad shape”, Morazo said. Completing the list of the FEU-Philippine contingent were Antonio Chavez (Rank 11), Kevin Mirano (Rank 14) and Lennon Heart Salgados (Rank 15).

PROVING it’s a force to reckon with, Far Eastern University humbled league-leading Saint Clare Colleges via a 2-1 decision and racked up eight out of nine maximum points to gain solo second in the National Collegiate Billiards League over the weekend at the Star Billiards Center in Quezon City.

Riding the crest of a 3-0 sweep of listless Don Bosco-Mandaluyong in their first match, the Tamaraws exposed chinks on the Saints’ armor behind another sterling performance from Andrei Ruiz who handed Ritchy Gogo his first loss in 9-ball play via a 7-4 count. The tandem of Mark Lacey and Danrisse Inductivo had earlier given FEU a 1-0 edge when they beat Richard Fernandez and Vennis Mariano 5-4 in 8-ball doubles.

Ellezer Castillo, still undefeated in 10-ball play, prevented an FEU shutout win by drubbing Lacey 7-4 as the Saints kept the lead with 29 points in the tourney backed by the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Accel and Negros Billiards Stable.

The Tamaraws ended the day with a 3-0 triumph over a no-show Centro Escolar University and improved their match point total to 28 points in the tourney also supported by H2O Hotel, Manila Ocean Park, Malungai Life Oil, Niknok Pritson Manok, Hermes Sports Bar, Human Plus Probiotics, Star Billiards Center, Brunswick, The Philippine STAR, Bugsy Promotions and Mediacom.

B-league is the first-ever collegiate billiards league in the country.

Rizal model student finalists bared

Four outstanding college students from Metro Manila, six from Luzon, four from the Visayas and three from Mindanao comprised the 17 finalists in this year’s search for Jose Rizal Model Students of the Philippines.

Announced by Mr. Pablo S. Trillana III, supreme commander of the Order of the Knights of Rizal which is a non-political, non-sectarian organization created by the 1951 law to propagate Rizalian ideals and teachings throughout the country.

The final interview of the 17 finalists to select the ten winners will be held on December 29 at the Knights of Rizal International Headquarters, Port Area, Manila and they will be honored in appropriate awarding ceremonies in the morning of Rizal Day, December 30 at the ceremonial hall at the same venue.

FEU still unbeaten in international chess fest

Representing the Philippines, reigning UAAP Chess champion both in men’s and women’s division, the Far Eastern University squad through John Ranel Morazo and Lennon Hart Salgados remain unbeaten in the ongoing GACC International Inter-Varsity Chess Championship being held at the University of Malaya in Malaysia.

Morazo slowed down the only super Grandmaster in the field by holding Maletin Pavel of Novosibirsk State Technological University in Russia, while Salgados racked up two-straight wins, the last against Zhang Changjie of Singapore, to match Morazo's 3.5 points. Both move closer to league leaders, including GM Bagheri Amir of Iran.

The GACC International Inter-Varsity Chess Championship is a chess tournament employing the Swiss-system, it is organized by Tuanku Bahiyah Residential College, University of Malaya. The league is open to undergraduates from all over the globe.

The competition started last December 14 and will end on December 21.

Manila inmates get help from DILG, FEU

“This is a milestone for Manila City Jail, the inmates are not forgotten by local government units, universities and colleges, and non-government organizations because these programs are being brought to them.” -BJMP Director General Dial

Currently, the Manila City Jail prison population has risen to four times its capacity of only 1,000. The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Far Eastern University (FEU) signed on Tuesday a memorandum of agreement (MOA) called “Project HOPE”, a program aimed to support the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP)-Manila City Jail inmates with legal, psycho-social, educational, medical, and livelihood services.

The MOA, which was signed by both DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo and FEU President Lydia B. Echauz at the FEU Administration Building, is good for two years. The program has been in existence since the time of then DILG Secretary Angelo Reyes.

HOPE stands for Helping Oppressed Prisoners’ Empowerment.

Under the MOA, FEU shall undertake the following activities: review the cases of select MCJ inmates and provide them with free legal assistance within the limits allowed by law; provide opportunities to earn livelihood through the provision of livelihood assistance and training; promote psycho-social and spiritual development of the inmates; and prepared and implement programs geared toward health promotion, health maintenance and disease prevention. On the other hand, the DILG through the BJMP shall provide adequate protection and security to FEU faculty, staff and students while performing their respective tasks within the premises of the city jail.

A total of 3,761 male inmates and 709 female inmates stand to benefit from the project which is a continuing community extension program of the university that is being conducted by its faculty, non-teaching staff and student volunteers.

Registration begins at 1:00 p.m. at the FEU Pavilion followed by pocket reunions for the alumnae of the Mass Communications, Psychology, Nursing, Institute of Technology departments, FEU-FERN Diliman, FEU High School and FEU Student Leaders until 4:00 pm.

Certainly the biggest gathering of FEU Alumni this year, The Christmas get-together follows at 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and will include interactive and fun activities for the graduates, as well as a Christmas Concert featuring the FEU Chorale and the UST Symphony Orchestra.

FEU still undefeated in UAAP men’s volleyball

Far Eastern University remained undefeated in the men’s division after it pulled off a 25-12, 23-25, 27-25, 28-26 victory over a hard-fighting National University side in the 73rd UAAP men’s volleyball tournament on Saturday at the San Juan Arena.

It was the Tamaraws’ third straight win to strengthen their bid to reclaim the title they last won in 2006.

Rodolfo Labrador Jr. led FEU’s assault, scoring 19 points. La Salle also remained undefeated after two games after squeezing out a 25-16, 25-18, 19-25, 17-25, 15-12 triumph against University of the Philippines.

Chris Macasaet had 21 hits and four blocks while Emilio Lee had 13 hits, 2 blocks and 2 aces to lift the Green Archers to solo second spot.

In the other women’s game, Shakey's V-League Season 7 second conference champion Adamson posted a thrilling come-from-behind 25-17, 23-25, 14-25, 25-14, 15-10 win over FEU.

Angela Benting paced the Lady Falcons with 19 points while third-year star Pau Soriano contributed 18 markers as the Lady Falcons improved to an even 1-1 slate after losing to La Salle on Sunday.

Shiela Marie Pineda also had solid production with 15 points for Adamson.

Tams bag LBC volley crown

Far Eastern University survived a spirited charge by Perpetual Help of Laguna and eked out a 25-19, 25-15, 16-25, 26-24 victory Saturday to become the first ever champion of the LBC Men's Volleyball League at the Arellano University gym.

High-leaping, power-hitting Nestor Molate unloaded 24 hits, including 19 on kills while coming away with four blocks as he powered the Tams, the University Games champion in Bacolod City last month, to the championship the inaugural staging of this premier seniors division of the league sponsored by LBC Hari ng Padala.

Molate eventually made it a double celebration as he bagged the MVP trophy during awards rites.

“We relaxed a bit but we regained our composure in time to prevent them from turning things around,” said FEU coach George Pascua.

The win by FEU was a virtual repeat of its 25-21, 25-15, 19-25, 25-21 win in their first and only meeting in the single-round elims, capping the Tams impressive campaign league organized by Metro Sports and backed by Shakey’s Pizza, Toby’s Sports, Dunkin’ Donuts, Mikasa and Asics.

In junior's action, University of the East also fought off Sta. Elena High School of Marikina’s tough stand in the first two sets before dominating the final frame en route to a 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 victory. Mayamot High of Antipolo City humbled St. Francis, 25-19, 25-16 and University of the Philippines won via default over Arellano U to end up third in the juniors and seniors divisions, respectively.

Rodolfo Labrador backed Molate’s solid game with 17 hits he laced with 10 spikes and four blocks while Pitrus Ocampo, a tall, versatile setter, came through with 42 successful sets while chipping in four kills and two service winners.

After yielding the first two sets, the Saints refused to give up and fought behind John Javier, Joel Javellana, power-hitting John Nunez and setter Edward Lirio as they took the third set and led at 18-16 in the fourth.

FEU gains LBC volley finals berth

Far Eastern University survived a tough second set challenge by University of the Philippines and went on to hack out a 25-16, 27-25, 25-13 victory to advance to the finals of the first LBC Men’s Volleyball League Sunday at the Arellano gym.

Arvin Avila came away with 10 kills while Rodolfo Labrador churned out an eight-kill, five-block performance as the Tams sustained their impressive elims campaign to get a crack at the crown.

Nestor Molate added 8 attacks and Karl de la Calzada chipped 6 kills for FEU, which faces University of Perpetual Help on Saturday for the crown in the centerpiece seniors division of the league.

The Saints turned back the Arellano U tossers in a thrilling five-setter, 25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13, to clinch the other finals berth.

Win or lose in the LBC finals, FEU remains the force to be reckon with in the coming 73rd UAAP Men’s Volleyball tournament. Last month, the Tamaraws copped the 15th Unigames volleyball crown for the ninth time, significantly defeating reigning UAAP Champion UST in the semi-finals.

Note: FEU holds the most UAAP volleyball championship crown both in Men’s and Women’s division with 24 and 29 titles respectively.

“Tutti Opera”: Hades Ladies at FEU

FEU’s President’s Committee on Culture and FilFest Cultural Foundation honor the dearly departed this November with two not to be missed performances of “Hades Ladies: A Decomposed Opera in 2 Acts.”

“Hades Ladies” features eight of the Philippines’ best sopranos performing famous arias from among the world’s best loved operas wherein all the characters meet their tragic ends in Hades.

These musical pieces are rearranged into a clever and entertaining storyline in short operatic form directed by Michael Williams and with libretto by Fides Asencio. The stunning cast list of “Hades Ladies: A Decomposed Opera in 2 Acts” includes Rachelle Gerodias, Jennifer Uy, Joy Abalon Tamayo, Camille Lopez Molina, Lena McKenzie, Mar Jeanelle Roldan, Meliza Reyes and Emily Olfindo. Lending their musical prowess to the performances are the brilliant newcomer tenor Jon Joven and the multi-awarded baritone Marvin Gayramon.

Far Eastern University (FEU), through its President’s Committee on Culture, presents “FEULIKULAHAN 3”, a 3-day film festival aiming to promote appreciation of a combination of independent, homegrown and foreign films among FEU students and the public.

FEUlikulahan 3 will run from November 17 – 19, 2010 at the historic FEU Auditorium and will showcase films such as “Tulak,” “The Rebels” and a screening of the Velvet Revolution on its 21st anniversary along with a speech on the Velvet Revolution by H.E. Ambassador Josef Rychtar from the Embassy of the Czech Republic.

The second day of the festival will feature the films, “A Journey Home”, “Grandma”, “Idol: Pag-Asa ng Bayan”, “Dinig” and a lecture on the Czech Republic by Ms. Monika Kazdova from the Embassy of the Czech Republic.

Tams make good showing at Unigames

Far Eastern University was a solid force at the 15th University Games (UNIGAMES) in Dumaguete City from October 24 to 30 bagging five medals.
Tamaraw teams that copped gold medals include Women's Table Tennis and Men's Volleyball, while Women's Chess and Women's Badminton settled for silvers. The Men's Basketball team took home a bronze at the expense of UAAP finals tormentor Ateneo De Manila.

The Women's Table tennis team continued their winning ways a few weeks after bagging their fourth straight title in the UAAP. The team was able to hold off strong performances from DLS - College of St. Benilde and San Beda College.

Meanwhile, the Men's Volleyball team arguably made the most significant showing in the UNIGAMES. The Tamaraw spikers defeated arch-rival and UAAP Champion UST in five thrilling sets in the semis.

The title still did not come easy as the Tams had to fend off a gritty stand from Foundation University, which stretched the championship to five sets, 21-25, 25-13, 23-25, 25-16 and 15-13.

Siliman University hosted the week-long annual event. Areas being considered for the 16th UNIGAMES include Roxas, Baguio and Bacolod

The 1st FEU Car Show

Although not officially sponsored by the FEU Management, hence some reported glitches at the event, the first-ever FEU Car Show was a success as it was participated by no more than 20 car owners. It was held last October 8 at the FERN Parking Lot near the FEU Manila campus.

UAAP 73: Ateneo completes a Grand Slam

What a record UAAP season 73 it has been for the Ateneo de Manila University, who happens to be next UAAP host school.

Although the current UAAP season is not over just yet and UAAP is not only about basketball in the first place, It already calls for a major Atenean celebration (October 4, 2010 has been declared a special school holiday) as their Men’s Basketball Team just placed themselves in the league’s history book after duplicating the rare three-peat made also by their junior’s counterpart through a finals sweep of the FEU Tamaraws in Game 2, 65-62 Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.

Finals MVP Ryan Buenafe carried the Blue Eagles in his shoulders in the last seven minutes of the game against the Tams, that came out fighting until the end, despite the absence of coach Capacio for the entire second half as he was brought to Medical City for precautionary check-up for high Blood Pressure which he has no history of, says FEU Athletics Director Mark Molina. Coach Glenn Capacio's contract is about to expire, FEU management said they have yet to assess everything in the off-season.

Meanwhile, Ateneo head coach Norman Black said, “With respect to my former players, this has been the most gratifying championship for me, mainly because this is the most difficult. We weren’t the favorites going to the season but I think we had a good team at the start, I just had to develop them as the league went on.” “The players just played hard all season and they have big hearts to get the job done,” added Black

Among the 17, 215 strong fans who trooped to the Big Dome for game two of the Men’s Basketball Finals were some notable FEU Alumni:

For next season, Ateneo has a star-studded cast to boost their chance to score a four-peat with the addition of Fil-Am center Greg Slaughter, Gwynne Capacio (son of Coach Glenn Capacio), Blue Eaglets Kiefer Ravena and Von Pessumal to fill the shoes left by Eric Salamat and Jason Escueta.

Albeit ending up in second place, the FEU Tamaraws will still remain a formidable force in 2011. Consider this, Terrence Romeo is just in his freshman year (Rookie of the Year awardee), Season MVP Ryan Roose Garcia is only a sophomore, Smart Gilas mainstays Ramos and Cawaling are still on the team plus the towering 6’10” Cameroonian import Christian Sentcheu, the cousin of Pipo Noundou. Did we say that except for Paul Sanga, the rest of the Tamaraws are intact? – That’s all for UAAP 74!

FEU Nursing Topnotchers Honored

Far Eastern University’s latest batch of Nursing topnotchers were honored by top school officials in simple rites last September 27 at the IAS Conference Room. FEU President Lydia Echauz delivered the inspirational message, while school’s trustee Angelina Jose gave the certificate of recognitions and cash awards thereafter.

The four Tamaraws that landed in the Top 10 of the latest Nursing Licensure Examinations given last July are John Joseph Mayo Montalbo (5th, 85.6%), Jamela Montoyo Arcilla (9th, 84.80%), Ferie Angelica Yvan Soriano Silvino (9th, 84.80%) and Robelou Lizano Ong (10th, 84.60).

Ateneo’s Kirk Long led the Blue Eagles’ mastery over FEU

Defending Back-to-Back Champion Ateneo de Manila University moved a win shy of a rare three-peat in the UAAP Men’s Basketball, after a surprising blowout win against top seeded Far Eastern University, 72-49 Saturday in game one of the best-of-three title series at the Big Dome.

The win went down as the most lopsided Finals victory since 1998. Hence the disappointment of the FEU coaching staff. FEU‘s Athletic Director Mark Molina said, “Its sad, I’m embarrassed.” “In the first quarter, I don't know if we caught up too much in the atmosphere of playing in the finals.”

ATENEO’S BEST GAME OF THE YEAR

Ateneo’s championship experience proved to be unmatched even by the Talented FEU team. The Blue Eagles did not only got back at the league leading Tamaraws, who beat them twice in the eliminations, they also hold down the latter to a measly 27 percent shooting clip in Game 1, compared to Ateneo’s 47.5 clip. The Katipunan-based squad outclassed the Morayta-based team in almost all aspects, including: fastbreak (15-0), turnover (7-16), points in the paint (42-22) and bench scoring (32-12).

This is probably our best game of the year, says Ateneo head coach Norman Black who is also seeking for his first three-peat since winning one as a PBA coach with San Miguel in 1989. Black is poised to be the second coach since the legendary Baby Dalupan to win a grandslam both in the pro and collegiate league - Dalupan gained prominence by coaching the University of the East Red Warriors to a record 12 UAAP titles and the Ateneo Blue Eagles to 2 NCAA titles. “We really don't talk about that too much. We're just trying to win the championship. Of course, we've been here before, and a lot of our guys too, but our motivation is to go out and win, nothing more and nothing less.”, Black said.

In game 1 of the titular showdown, Ateneo dusted FEU off the breaks, chalking up 15 transition points to none against the Tamaraws, including 9 in a 20-2 first quarter run, which apparently set the tone of the game.

With RR Garcia forced out of his playmaking chores by Ateneo’s menacing half court defense early on, FEU settled for erratic one-on-one plays and poor shot selection to mirror a woeful 21.9% clip in the first half.

By the time Garcia and the Tamaraw squad started to find their range and desperately catching up, the Eagles were already gliding on top with a commanding 42-21 margin heading into the third period.

Consecutive baskets from Salva that sandwiched a Long triple to open the third gave Ateneo its biggest lead at 47-21.

The Tamaraws responded, though sparingly on a Romeo three and Chris Exciminiano lay-up for a 35-53 count before Monfort nailed a three and Chua went for an under goal stab to restore Ateneo’s 20-plus lead, 60-48.

The Eagles again led by as much as 25 points, 66-41, on a Monfort drive with less than 6 minutes remaining in the pay-off period and Ateneo was never seriously threatened from thereon for a Tamaraw comeback, which did not really happened in a forgettable championship match for FEU.

NOTES

Per league’s record, the winning team in Game 1 turned out to be the series winner in 12 out of the last 16 UAAP Men’s Basketball best-of-three championship showdown. Thus, a seemingly inevitable Ateneo three-peat achievement will put them among the ranks of FEU, UST, UE and La Salle as the only teams to dominate the league for three consecutive seasons.

After the two hour closed-door meeting with the team, FEU head coach Glenn Capacio finally claimed that he did not see any effort on his team. “The players just showed 50 percent of it. We were outplayed. We didn’t win in any department.” Team Captain Jens Knuttel on the other hand said, “We want to show to everyone that we’re not patsies, we waited for this opportunity for how many years. We showed the effort all season long, but in the finals, we suddenly showed up lacking the effort.”

DOUBLE WHAMMY FOR FEU

The FEU Women’s Basketball Team, who won the crown two years ago and last year’s second placer had the same fate earlier that day as defending titlist Adamson outclassed the Lady Tams, 75-69 to move an inch closer to winning the championship for two years in a row.

It was a double whammy indeed, ironically both FEU Basketball Teams finished the elimination round as the number 1 team in the league.

Game 2 for both Men’s and Women’s Basketball Finals is set on Thursday (September 30) at the Araneta Coliseum, Women’s game starts at 11 am, followed by the UAAP individual awards at 3pm and Senior’s at 4pm.

FEU bags UAAP 73 Men’s Beach Volley plum

FEU Men’s Volleyball power duo Nestor Molate and Arvin Avila with reserve Maverick Gabriel outlasted Henry Pecaña and Harby Ilano of defending champion UST in 21-12, 21-16 sets Saturday at the University of the East-Caloocan sand court to reclaim the UAAP Beach Volleyball crown, the Tamaraws last held three years ago.

Molate was declared as this season’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

On the other hand, second-seeded and two-time Beach Volleyball champion, the FEU Women’s team played by Shaira Gonzales and Shedd dela Peña settled for third place after losing to La Salle’s Charlene Cruz and Mikaela Esperanza in three sets 21-14, 18-21, 16-14. Adamson’s Angela Benting and Paulina Soriano eventually won the Women’s title for two consecutive years. Benting was also the MVP for two years now.

We will be seeing more action from the FEU Men’s and Women’s Volleyball team this November for the opening of UAAP 73 Indoor Volleyball games.

Romeo topscored with 12 points to share scoring honors with Sanga

For the first time since 2005 (eventually winning the crown that year), the Tamaraw squad returns to UAAP Men’s Basketball finals after an overtime semis demolition of La Salle, 69-59 Thursday at the Big Dome.

Despite questionable calls by the referees, resulting to FEU’s Jr Cawaling being thrown out of the game early on in the second period and Coach Glenn Capacio earning his own technical foul at the third, the more experienced Tams still prevailed over determined rookie-laden Archers.

DLSU was leading, 52-49 barely 2:32 minutes left in the fourth canto until a Romeo’s cold-blooded three (1st 3pts. shot of FEU) that tied the game at 52 apiece. La Salle’s Yutien Andrada and Jovet Mendoza, contributed three points from the free throw line to get the lead back into three, 55-52. Quiet for most part with just 30 ticks away, Paul Sanga who is in his last playing year in the UAAP broke his silence with a long triple (biggest shot of the game) to level the count at 55-all to set up the extra period.

At the end of the regulation, FEU found the hero again in this season’s Rookie of the Year, Terrence Romeo who knocked in another big three-pointer in the last three minutes of the overtime period, which proved to be the turning point for the Tamaraws, earning the lead at 62-59.

Finally, there’s no better way to seal the come-from-behind win other than a Pipo Noundou slam dunk in the last 11 seconds of play that stirred the FEU crowd up on their feet at the Araneta Coliseum, including our very own FEU President Lydia Echauz and FEU chair Dr. Lourdes Montinola.

Romeo who once scored 83 points in a single game for the FEU Baby Tams stresses in the post-game interview that he really wanted to play in the finals, saying he was all confident with his shots. League MVP RR Garcia has also said, “I’m happy for Terrence. Talagang nag-step up siya. Hindi ako maka-shoot kasi nasa akin ang focus ng depensa nila (La Salle).”

FEU is now only two wins away from an unprecedented 20th crown – the most basketball championship, a UAAP school has ever had. The Tams’ finals opponent depends on the outcome of the Adamson-Ateneo final four match up on Sunday, September 19 still at the Big Dome. Three-peat seeker Ateneo Blue Eagles (#2) who has the twice-to-beat edge is favored to win the game considering that the Falcons (#3) has never won against them since September 18, 1997 or for 27 consecutive games.

Facts: FEU’s 2005 championship year and this year’s (2010) achievement so far, is strikingly the same as per records are concern. In both years, they had the same elimination round finish (12-2), where the two losses of FEU was against the 3rd and 4th seeded team - FEU has never been beaten by the 2nd ranked team plus, both year’s season MVP came from FEU, Arwind Santos in 2005 and RR Garcia this year.

Vice Ganda all praises to FEU cheering squad

Most of us may already know that one of the country’s most popular and sought-after comedienne, who was just recently became a certified Kapamilya star is an alumnus of Far Eastern University.

Graduating from FEU Highschool with an aspiration to become a lawyer, he took up Political Science at the same school, until he stopped for certain reasons in 1996.

Even when Vice or Jose Marie Viceral in real life was not yet known to many, he used to watch UAAP games whenever FEU teams are playing especially Volleyball.

During a Showtime episode Wednesday, where he was a resident judge and host, Vice was all praise for the FEU Cheering Squad (Cheerdancers), who were fresh from competing at this year’s UAAP Cheerdance event.

It can be remembered that Vice also praised the Cheering Squad and the Tamaraw Team, the first time he went back in FEU after several years. It was during the culmination of the school’s week-long 82nd founding anniversary celebration last January this year. (Watch clips below)

The last time Vice was spotted watching a UAAP game was when he was accompanied by his celebrity friend, Allan K. last February at the Arena in San Juan for the game 1 of UAAP 72 Men’s and Women’s Volleyball finals. Perhaps, we can expect for Vice to come out and support again the FEU team come November 27 for the opening of UAAP 73 Volleyball games.

RR Garcia bags UAAP 73 MVP award

“Winning the MVP has not yet crossed my mind. My goal is to win the championship for our school, one game at a time.”

FEU Sophomore cager Ryan Roose Garcia went on to capture the UAAP 73 Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) recognition for topping the individual statistical points and most importantly for leading the Tamaraw squad even at the jaws of defeat as they ended the elimination round as the top seeded team with 12-2 win loss card, the team’s best finish since winning the crown in 2005.

Indeed, the 20 year old Zamboangeno has transformed himself from an ordinary basketball hopeful to a formidable presence inside the court, which is exemplified in his masterful clutch plays. Garcia finished the eliminations with 59.2 statistical points, followed by NU’s Emmanuel Mbe with 59 points, while FEU’s Aldrech Ramos is third with 58.7 points, completing the Mythical five are UE’s Paul Lee and Ken Acibar. FEU’s Reil Cervantes was disqualified from being included in the Mythical Five circle because of his one-game suspension last August given by the UAAP board, after earning two unsportsmanlike foul for the current season.

Meanwhile, FEU’s Terrence Romeo was the runaway Rookie of the Year (ROY) winner beating Ateneo's Art dela Cruz and La Salle's Luigi de la Paz. Romeo, who bagged last season’s juniors' MVP award, had 37.8 while dela Cruz only came up with 31 points. Note that National University standout rookie, Emmanuel Mbe (59 points) is not qualified for the ROY, because a player must need to be straight out of High School to win it.

The formal awarding is expected during the finals and should RR Garcia become the official MVP, he will become the first FEU point guard since Johnny Abarrientos to win the MVP. This is also the third straight year that both the MVP and the top rookie honors went to the same school.

Ateneo started it in 2008, when Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Ryan Buenafe claimed the awards. Last year, despite being ousted in the semifinals, University of Santo Tomas (UST) found relief in the duo of Dylan Ababou and Jeric Teng, who snared the MVP and ROY trophies, respectively.

Other notable FEU cagers who bagged the MVP plum were Joselito Roa (1961), import Anthony Williams (1981), Garcia’s current coach Glenn Capacio (1983) and Arwind Santos in 2004 and 2005.

UP pep squad reclaims Cheerdance title

The University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad bagged their 6th cheerdance championship crown, Sunday at the 2010 UAAP Cheerdance Competition at the Araneta Coliseum. Packed with 20,950 spectators, The maroon pep squad’s triumph was sort of a redemption for UP as their Men’s and Junior’s basketball team just ended season 73 without a win (0-14). UP’s “hala-bira” classic fiesta Filipiniana-theme, featuring take-offs from the Philippines’ famous festivals: the Ati-Atihan and the Masskara Festival in Bacolod garnered 440.9 points or 88.18%. UP coach NJ Antonio has said that, “Some people were saying that we should win considering that our basketball team failed to win a single time.”

Last year’s champion, Far Eastern University (FEU) Cheering Squad who sported a Japanese-Samurai theme settles for the 1st runner up honor with 421.4 points (84.28%) despite a definite show-stopping routine. Many people even thought that FEU just had it for a back-to-back title, but they were wrong at least according to the five judges. Nevertheless, the FEU Squad under the guidance of its coach, Jacqueline Alolor vowed for a comeback next year. She says, “We accept the decision of the judges and what is important is that we were able to execute our difficult routine flawlessly. We’ll take the degree of difficulty of our stunts to another level next year. We’ll be back and try to win the championship again”.

After the surprising fourth place finish last year, perennial championship contender University of Santo Tomas (UST) Salinggawi Dance Troupe made its presence felt once more as they claimed 2nd runner up title. Their White Tiger theme earned them 407.5 points (81.50%).

UP took home Php 340,000.00 while FEU and UST got Php 200,000.00 and Php 140,000.00 respectively from the competition’s sponsor Samsung plus electronic gadgets for each member of the UP pep squad.

Ateneo’s Blue Babble Battalion, which took runner-up honors last season, fell down to fourth spot while La Salle’s Animo Squad, behind its heroism theme finished fifth. The University of the East, with a Warrior-inspired concept, placed sixth, while National University and sloppy Adamson took seventh and eighth, respectively.

The criteria were as follows: dance technique (10 points), jumps (5 points), tumbling skills (5 points), tosses (5 points), lifts/stunts (10 points), pyramids (10 points), formations (5 points), choreography (10 points), degree of difficulty (10 points), synchronization (10 points), audibility/clarity (5 points), uniform/props (5 points) and overall effectiveness (10 points).

The “UAAP Cheerdance Competition” was a hot topic in the internet and even became the No. 1 trending topic on twitter worldwide.

RR Garcia of Far Eastern University is still the leading candidate for the UAAP Most Valuable Player award.

Though the Final Four cast has long been decided, the protagonists are most likely still trying to figure out the best strategy for winning the trophy with one remaining game left for each before the semifinals begin.

FEU and Ateneo have secured the twice-to-beat advantage, but the result of their encounter on Saturday may depend on the outcome of the La Salle, Adamson game for third place set on Thursday.

Depending on how they assess their chances against the third placer or the fourth placer, the Tamaraws and the Eagles, might simply let the other team win for the chance of playing a team they perceive to be weaker in the semifinals.

Based on current standings, FEU appears to have the edge against Ateneo when they play in the second game of the doubleheader at the Araneta Coliseum.

A win by FEU means it plays the fourth placer, which could be the loser of the game between La Salle and Adamson, while Ateneo takes on the winner.

FEU may have little choice, having been beaten by both La Salle and Adamson. But the Tams may have a stronger chance at beating La Salle whose line-up is filled with rookies.

FEU, at 11-2, gets the outright top spot with a victory although it can still top the standings if Ateneo (10-3) wins by less than four points.

As far as La Salle and Adamson are concerned, their semifinal opponent is out of their control.

But for La Salle and Ateneo die hards, they would rather see their teams clash in the finals than in the semis. Which is still possible assuming that Ateneo tops the standings and La Salle places third. Or, Ateneo places second overall and La Salle lands fourth.

And then both teams win their semifinal assignments.

That, indeed, would be a dream match up.

But all three teams must not overlook the threat from the Falcons.

The team has already become the surprise of the league after getting into the Final Four only for the second time since the format was instituted in 1994.

‘Major major’ upset in UAAP 73

MANILA – If Philippines’ Miss Universe candidate (4th runner up) Venus Raj had a “major major” blunder while answering the final question in the pageant last week, this past weekend, schools participating in the on-going UAAP Season 73 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum had a major major upset over respective rivals halfway in the second round eliminations. Last Saturday, season host De La Salle University (DLSU) bounced back from a humiliating loss to Ateneo, by no less than defeating league leader, Far Eastern University (FEU) 80-66. Earlier, University of Santo Tomas’ fourth quarter run propelled a Tiger win over University of the Philippines, 68-66. UP is now only two losses away from yet another winless season. The following day, National University (NU) ended the miracle run by University of the East (UE), 69-68 at the height of UE’s desperate attempt to get a chance to compete in the elite final four round. Also that day, Ateneo defeated Adamson, 55-52 to claim the solo second spot in the standing thereby securing a semis slot.

As promised by La Salle head coach Dindo Pumaren, DLSU indeed rebounded from its setback to Ateneo, shaming top seeded FEU. La Salle team captain Simon Atkins shrugged off a nasty cut on his left eyebrow to fuel the second half breakaway for the Green Archers, who boosted their drive for the Final Four with their seventh win in 11 outings.

FEU was in control for first three quarters, even going ahead 52-44 towards the end of the third before La Salle closed the period with a 10-5 run. La Salle then became unstoppable in the last canto. FEU’s RR Garcia, season 73 MVP top contender had 18 points in the game but went surprisingly scoreless in the fourth quarter. “The boys showed their character after that nightmare against Ateneo,” Pumaren said, referring to their 57-74 setback to their arch-rivals. “I saw their A-game today and all the boys played well.” The key, according to Pumaren, was the rebound department, where La Salle had a 19-9 edge in the offensive board and a 45-32 margin overall.

Atkins suffering a cut, came back revitalized in the final half, pumping in 14 points, including 10 in a 20-8 windup. “We were really challenged by coach who told us that if we want to bounce back from that loss to Ateneo, we can bounce back strong by beating FEU, the No. 1 team in the UAAP.”, said Atkins who is the current UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week.

Atkins was supported by Luigi dela Paz (12), Jarelan Tampos (10) and Yutien Andrada (9). FEU drew 18 points from Garcia, 14 from Aldrech Ramos and 11 from Terrence Romeo.

In Sunday’s double-header, the Red Warriors hit the dead end after losing to a more composed NU Bulldogs. UE is set to break their eight-year final four streak. Following the demise of UE, final four and twice-to-beat aspirant Adamson was nipped by defending champion Ateneo as the Eagles kept its mastery over Falcons, to finally snare the no. 2 spot and the outright Final Four berth.

FEU Law Dean is the new PCGG head

President Benigno Aquino has appointed Far Eastern University Institute of Law dean Juan Andres Bautista as chairman of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) to replace Camilo Sabio, the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) confirmed yesterday. Dean Bautista, who earned his degree in Legal Management from the Ateneo de Manila University in 1986 and graduated class valedictorian from the Ateneo Law School in 1990, served as president of the Philippine Association of Law Schools. Bautista finished his Masters of laws from Harvard Law School. He is a concurrent chief executive of Kuok Group Philippines, a multinational company that owns holdings in various industries, including the Shangri-La chain of hotels. He was also a former member of the Consultative Commission on Charter Change, an independent body formed by then President Gloria Arroyo in 2005, purposively to propose revisions to the 1987 constitution.

UPDATE: Dean Bautista silently assumed the post in a simple turnover ceremony sans the media fanfare on September 1.

FEU beats UST, clinches 1st final four slot

Far Eastern University (FEU) turned back on University of Santo Tomas (UST), 76-67, to enlist its 13th semifinal appearance since the introduction of the Final Four format in 1994.

Bigman Aldrech Ramos and former Baby Tamaraw standout Terrence Romeo led the charge for FEU with 21 points and 13, respectively, to deal UST’s fifth straight loss Saturday night in the 73rd UAAP men's basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

“At least we are already here at the Final Four but we should never rest our guards because our aim is to enter the Top 2, get the twice-to-beat bonus. The players came big for us today. For this game, the defense was concentrated on RR but his assists and leadership inside the court made up for it,” said coach Glenn Capacio.

In a game marked by five deadlocks and four lead changes, FEU repeated its mastery over UST by pulling away in the final canto and crush the hopes of the gritty Espana-based cagers.

Jeric Fortuna, who peppered eight triples in a single game last month, made a poor outside shooting (one of six attempts) to banner UST’s losing cause with 12 markers, three boards and seven assists.

The Tamaraws are still on top of the heap with a 9-1 card while the Tigers found themselves in the brink after sporting a 3-7 slate, alongside University of the East.

New institute in FEU this 2nd semester

A whole new institute will be added to the current six institutes in FEU’s main campus in Morayta, Manila this second semester of the current school year. It will be named as the Institute of Tourism and Hospitality Management (ITHM) composed mainly of Tourism and Hotel and Restaurant Management students. ITHM is set to be the largest institute in Far Eastern University in terms of population estimating to 6,000 students. By then, it will easily dwarf the Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS) and the Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance (IABF) with 5,300 and 5,100 population respectively. The Institute of Nursing (IN) which used to be the largest institute in the campus suffered a sharp decline of enrollees over the past years, as such its present population is just about 4,400. Reportedly, ITHM will have its new dean by October.

Andrea Bianca Martin Manzano in real life, also known as Andi Manzano or simply Andi-9 is a popular disc jockey in FM radio station Magic 89.9, a MTV VJ and a Print and TV ad model. Although she’s from Miriam College, she was a former courtside reporter for the FEU Tamaraws during the 70th UAAP Season and now she recently joined GMA 7’s roster of talents and is one of three new female Kapuso celebrities who will be introduced on Party Pilipinas this Sunday, August 22. She is the second cousin of Luis Manzano and the niece of Edu Manzano. She’s currently hosting Magic’s radio show Top 5 at 5 with Jessica Mendoza, another UAAP courtside reporter for the Ateneo Blue Eagles. Andi-9 is finally ready to join mainstream television and is gearing up for bigger things in her blossoming career. “For now I’ll be concentrating on my hosting stints. Maybe in the future, I may also try acting”, says Andi.

FEU sweeps UE in ‘Battle of the East’

Top-seeded Far Eastern University (FEU) squandered a 16-point lead before warding off University of the East (UE) in overtime, 83-77 in the UAAP Season 73 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The Tamaraws scored 11 against the Warriors’ five in extra minutes to get back on track after Adamson ended their win streak last week.

It was the Tamaraws’ first season sweep of the Red Warriors since 2004.

After being down by as many as 16 points, the Red Warriors came back with Paul Zamar almost singlehandedly lifting UE before turning it over to Paul Lee and Raphy Reyes in the final quarter.

Erwin Duran scored on a putback off a huge offensive rebound to tie the score at 72-all with time down to 1:27 in the fourth.

The Warriors had a chance to fashion out a comeback win for the ages as Lee beat Ping Exciminiano and drove inside and dished out Reyes, but the latter missed a point-blank stab that could have given them the win in regulation—which ended at 74-74

In overtime, Reil Cervantes hit a turnaround jumper over Duran then picked up a loose ball by Lee that he dunked for good measure. The four-point binge gave FEU a 78-74 lead it would not relinquish.

Ryan Garcia led the Tamaraws with 23 points and Cervantes, who is celebrating his birthday on Monday, added 19. National player Al Ramos added a quiet 13 points to the FEU effort.

Ken Acibar had 18 points apiece and hauled down a game-high 20 rebounds on top of three blocks, while Zamar also had 18 points for UE, which fell to 2-6.

Reyes and Lee added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Acibar’s board total was the most since former University of Santo Tomas Tiger Jervy Cruz pulled down the same number against UE in a match in 2008.

It took Adamson eight years to defeat Far Eastern University again in the UAAP Men’s Basketball tournament and it couldn’t get any sweeter, as the Falcons hands FEU its first loss, 64-63 in season 73 at the start of 2nd round eliminations Thursday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

The Tamaraws had a chance to win the game despite a miserable field goal shooting in the last quarter when Aldrech Ramos, receiving a pass from MVP top contender RR Garcia pushed FEU up for the last time, 63-62. With 6.8 ticks left in the ball game, Falcons’ head coach Leo Austria called for a time out then the rest is history – It was Eric Camson’s winning tip-in at 2.2 seconds, off of a missed drive by Alex Nuyles that turned the tide against the erstwhile undefeated FEU Tamaraws. “Walang makaka-sweep ng eliminations, na-normalize na, there’s a final four. This is a big statement, yung confidence ng mga players ay nabubuo na and beating FEU is not an easy job”, says coach Leo Austria.

The win gave Adamson the solo second spot in the standings with its 6-2 win loss card, FEU slipped to 7-1 but remains to be the top-seeded team.

The nine day (August 6-15) NBA fit camp in the Philippines is the first ever in Southeast Asia and the largest of its kind in the Asia-pacific region. The previous ones in Japan, Korea and China were held on smaller scales. The NBA FIT is a comprehensive health and wellness program that encourages physical activity and healthy living for children and families through programs, events, and products. The camp was led by Miami Head Coach Erik Spoelstra along with assistant coach David Fizdale.

College basketball powerhouse Far Eastern University is one of the only two UAAP schools (the other one is De La Salle University) to be given a chance to undergo this professional fitness program – the NBA way.

During the event, the NBA’s first Fil-American head coach perhaps delivered a strong message to the two FEU squads, particularly to some players of the men’s basketball squad that is currently leading the 73rd UAAP basketball tournament with a perfect 7-0 slate.

On one drill in which he asked the players to perform the proper form of defensive stance, he told them that, “championships are won at this point (of training) by having proper fundamentals.”

That message caught the attention of Tamaraws coach Glenn Capacio.

“Discipline is really the No. 1 key and but it will also boil down on the hardwork of the players. Maybe that’s what he meant,” said Capacio, who also took part in some of the other drills such as dribbling and pick-and-roll plays.

“I think his message was really a reminder for us to follow instructions and not to take the basic fundamentals for granted,” said FEU guard RR Garcia, who leads the UAAP MVP race after first round hostilities.

Meanwhile, a total of 80 basketball hopefuls from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) will be trained using latest NBA techniques and will take part in hydration “sweat tests” and tailored nutrition seminars on Wednesday, August 11 at the Big Dome.
